Meaning and origin of the name SOS:

SOS

“SOS” is the three-letter international distress call, originally expressed in Mores Code as “..._ _ _...” (three dots, three dashes, three dots).  This combination was established by the International Radiotelephony Convention in Berlin, in 1906.  The three letters (SOS) do not refer to any particular words, but rather were chosen at the time due to the ease with which they can be transmitted.
On discovering the symbolism of SOS, it seemed to us to be appropriate to adopt this symbol in creating this organization, to send out an international distress call:  an SOS for the many brothers in need.

History

HI. My name is Marco A. González.
My father: Marco Tulio González (Nicaraguan)
My mother: Elvira Garland de González (Peruvian)
I was born on August 24, 19-something, in Lima, Peru. In 1982 I emigrated to Florida (USA), where I live today.

At the age of 3 I traveled, together with my parents and siblings, to live in Nicaragua, in a beautiful small city called Diriamba. Six months later I was struck by the disease poliomyelitis, which seriously affected my arms and legs, limiting me to move around only in a wheel chair.  Thanks to the way in which my parents brought me up, my childhood was the same as that of any other child, and I never felt that I was worth less than any one else.
Thanks also to the financial resources of my family, I had access to the best medical treatment, physical therapy, and various corrective surgical operations that helped me to become a person able to take care of myself, to be active and productive;  In short, I was privileged.
During  the course of my life, I have met many beautiful people, special individuals.... earthbound angels in disguise:  doctors, religious people, nurses, police officers, simple country folk, and oftentimes unknown anonymous people.  Every one of them has given me, selflessly, something of themselves.
I always wanted to give back to Life part of the many blessings that I have received.  I always wanted to give, but I had not found the appropriate way to do so.
One day my ex wife Lucia told me about a friend who she had met during her childhood.  His name was Ricardo Bermúdez, and he lived in Diriamba, Nicaragua.
She told me the story of this man who, when he was a small child, had been shot in the spine, leaving him paraplegic, so she had sent a wheelchair to Nicaragua for him.  Years later, during a trip that I took to Diriamba to visit my mother, I met Ricardo in person, and I must confess that his pureness of heart touched me.  I asked Ricardo what I could do to help him.  I told him to give me a list of what he needed, warning him that I didn't’t have the financial resources to be able to help him with everything by myself, but that he should write down what he needed, and together with other friends I would try to help him.

The letter that Ricardo wrote, his humbleness and his needs, touched my soul.
Ricardo would never have guessed it, but that day, through his letter, instead of him asking me for something, he gave me something!  He gave me the opportunity to see the need in others, he showed me a reality that I had never touched so closely before.

I felt ashamed of being so selfish, living my life without sharing, without thinking of others.  He taught me to be humble, and he gave me the drive to help.

Without realizing it, Ricardo gave me the answer that I had been seeking for many years:  How I could help.   So Ricardo became the first person to donate something for a needy person like me: Ricardo gave me a conscience, becoming the pioneer of this organization.  Thank you, Ricardo.
